First Ever COVID Penalty Hits Rushmoor Pub
Rushmoor has seen its first COVID-19 penalty notice slapped on a local business. After multiple visits and warnings from Hampshire Constabulary and Environmental Health Officers, a pub in Mount Pleasant Road was finally fined for breaching coronavirus regulations.
Customers Flouted Rules, Standing and Moving Around Inside
On October 7, police found the pub failing to follow key safety measures. Instead of managing food and drink service properly, customers were standing at the bar, roaming the premises, and not seated while drinking. This went against Regulation 9 (1) of The Health Protection (Coronavirus Restrictions) (No 2) (England) Regulations 2020.
Council Slams Rule-Breakers but Praises Most Locals
“I am constantly amazed at the cooperation and diligence of our businesses and residents in working together to overcome the challenges presented by COVID. But I am also astounded at the few who fail to do what is needed. Their actions potentially affect us all,” said Rushmoor Borough Council’s Cabinet member for Operational Services, Councillor Maurice Sheehan.
“It’s sad we must now enforce these rules, but with cases rising again globally, nationally, and locally, it’s necessary. Enforcement will be proportionate but firm.”
He urged businesses and residents to follow the advice on the GOV.UK website and do their part to keep everyone safe.
Police Warn of Serious Public Health Risks
Local Licensing Officer PC Phil Dennett said: “It is very disappointing that a licensed premise has been in breach of the clear hospitality guidelines designed to keep customers safe. This showed a clear disregard for the rules protecting the whole community during this difficult time.”
This crackdown sends a strong message—rule-breakers in hospitality will face consequences as the pandemic continues.
