Scott Mitchell Named People’s Champion in Dame Barbara Windsor Dementia Mission
Scott Mitchell, husband of the late Dame Barbara Windsor, has been appointed as the People’s Champion for the national dementia mission launched in her memory. The UK government made the announcement, praising Mitchell’s tireless work advocating for dementia awareness and research.
No.10 Roundtable Highlights Dementia Fight
The appointment was unveiled at a roundtable and reception held at 10 Downing Street. The event brought together charities, academics, business leaders, investors, and those living with dementia to push forward efforts to beat the disease. It also honoured organisations driving fundraising across the UK.
Dame Barbara 1 Dementia Mission: Doubling Down on Research
Launched in August 2022, the Dame Barbara 1 Dementia Mission honours Dame Barbara and others affected by dementia. The government has pledged to double dementia research funding by 2024-25. Co-Chaired by Hilary Evans and Nadeem Sarwar, the Mission aims to fast-track breakthroughs and new treatments for dementia sufferers.
“I’m deeply honoured to be appointed People’s Champion,” said Scott Mitchell. “Barbara’s campaigning was powerful, and it’s vital we keep her legacy alive by prioritising those affected by dementia and listening to their experiences.”
£6 Million Boost & Cutting-Edge Tech in Dementia Fight
The mission also secured a £6 million investment to fund clinical trials and innovative projects across the UK, including Scotland and Northern Ireland. Cutting-edge technologies like AI and biomarkers will be harnessed to improve dementia diagnosis and treatment.
In a further step forward, the new Neurodegeneration Initiative was announced. Led by Medicines Discovery Catapult, it aims to speed up development of innovative dementia therapies by providing vital tools to industry and academia.
Groundbreaking Projects Secured Funding
Innovate UK awarded grants to ten pioneering projects via the Small Business Research Initiative (SBRI) dementia biomarker competition. These include AI-powered diagnostic tools and retinal scanning techniques for early detection, showcasing fresh approaches against dementia.
Scott Mitchell’s appointment as People’s Champion sends a strong signal of the UK’s commitment to dementia awareness, research, and innovative treatment solutions. With cross-sector collaboration and government backing, hope is rising for millions battling this cruel disease.
