11-Year-Old Girl Missing After Falling Into River Thames Near London City Airport
A frantic search is underway after an 11-year-old girl plunged into the River Thames at Barge House Causeway, close to London City Airport, on Monday afternoon, March 31.
Emergency Services Launch Massive Rescue Operation
The Met Police were alerted around 1:15pm following reports of a child in the river. Teams from the London Ambulance Service, police, and specialist water rescue units swiftly arrived, launching an extensive operation to find the missing girl.
Heartbreaking Witness Accounts
Local resident Kerry Benadjaoud, 62, recalls the panic: two children dashed past shouting their friend had fallen in.
“I grabbed a life ring and rushed down, but she had vanished. I later found her shoes, a sock, coat, and phone by the riverbank and gave them to police,” said Kerry, shaken.
A young boy who was with the girl revealed he tried to hold her hand as she slipped into the cold water but lost grip.
“The little boy said, ‘I tried to hold her hand, but it slipped.’ He obviously needs support – this will haunt him,” Kerry added.
How It Happened & The Ongoing Search
Witnesses said the girl had been paddling near the concrete slope that leads into the Thames, a popular spot for boat access, before she lost footing and fell in.
The London Ambulance Service confirmed they dispatched crews, including hazardous area experts, but stood down while police and rescue teams continue the search.
Police confirmed the girl’s family have been informed and are receiving support. The community remains on edge, with residents gathering anxiously near the scene.
