Meet Chorizo: The Tiny Dachshund Changing Lives in Sheffield

A pint-sized dachshund named Chorizo has graduated as an assistance dog, giving new independence to her wheelchair-using owner, Heather, who suffers from multiple sclerosis.

Tiny Dog, Huge Impact

Chorizo trained with Sheffield charity Support Dogs, specialising in disability assistance. Her skills are impressive: she opens and closes doors, picks up dropped items like keys and phones, and walks beside Heather’s leg to offer protection and support.

“She opens and closes doors, retrieves dropped items like keys and phones, and even walks beside Heather’s leg, providing protection and support,” said Support Dogs instructor Nicola Wood.

Despite her small size, Chorizo is making a massive difference. Diagnosed with MS in 2016, Heather struggled with pain, mobility, and anxiety — especially about her leg’s safety. Now, with Chorizo by her side, she can leave the house alone with confidence.

Breaking the Big Dog Myth

Nicola Wood praised Chorizo for proving that assistance dogs come in all shapes and sizes. “People often think only Labradors or big dogs can help, but Chorizo shatters that myth. Smaller breeds can provide top-class support too.”

Inspiration for Many

Heather and Chorizo’s heartwarming bond highlights the incredible role dogs play in helping disabled people live fuller lives. Their story is a beacon of hope for others facing similar challenges.
