Firefighters raced to a blazing shop on Mount Pleasant Road, Tunbridge Wells, on the evening of Thursday, 29 May. Smoke and flames were spotted billowing from the commercial premises, sparking immediate emergency calls.
Fast Response from Fire Crews
Kent Fire and Rescue Service got the alert at 8:18pm and sent two fire engines straight away. Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus stormed inside, using high-pressure hose reel jets to tackle the flames head-on. The fire was fully controlled by 10:02pm, with no injuries reported.

Accidental Fire Caused by Careless Smoking
Investigators have traced the blaze to improperly discarded smoking materials which ignited nearby combustibles. A formal inquiry confirmed the fire was accidental, ruling out foul play.
Kent Fire Service Urges Caution
Kent Fire and Rescue Service has issued vital safety tips to prevent similar incidents:
- Always make sure cigarettes are fully extinguished and cooled before tossing them away.
- Use sturdy ashtrays that won’t easily tip over.
- Avoid smoking indoors, especially near flammable items.
“Thankfully no one was injured, but this incident serves as a timely reminder that even small embers can cause significant damage if not properly managed,” said a Kent Fire spokesperson.
Mount Pleasant Road was partially closed during the firefighting efforts but reopened later that night, easing traffic chaos.
