Woman Rescued After Smoke Fills Flat in Early Morning Drama
A woman was led to safety by firefighters after her flat on Clarendon Road filled with thick smoke just after 1am. Crews from Southsea and Cosham rushed to the scene when neighbours raised the alarm.
Unattended Cooking Sparks Scare
Investigations revealed the blaze started due to food left unattended in the oven. The woman, who had come home from a night out and popped a pie into the oven, fell asleep before it was cooked, allowing smoke to fill the flat unnoticed.
Lucky Escape from Potential Tragedy
The occupant was asleep in her bedroom when firefighters entered the flat. A Hampshire Fire and Rescue spokesman said:
“Fortunately, no one was seriously injured. But this incident could have ended badly given the amount of smoke generated. If neighbours hadn’t raised the alarm, or if the fire had grown, the outcome could have been far worse.”
He added: “Cooking after a night out is never safe. When tired or under the influence, it’s a dangerous mix. We recommend people plan ahead and have no-cook food ready or simply order a takeaway.”
Firefighters Take No Chances
- Used a positive pressure ventilation fan to clear smoke.
- Installed smoke alarms in the flat and neighbouring homes.
- Offered fire safety advice to residents.
This incident is a stark reminder: never risk cooking while fatigued or impaired. Stay safe and smart to avoid a nightmare in the early hours.
