Snow and Ice Chaos Hits Northern UK
Snow and ice warnings are flashing across Northern Ireland, northwest England, and north Wales from midday until midnight Tuesday. Drivers face treacherous roads and major delays during morning commutes. Travel disruption is set to worsen as icy conditions tighten their grip.
Bitter Cold and Frosts to Bite
A sharp frost will sweep in overnight, plunging temperatures to a chilling -4 to -8°C. Snow has already blanketed parts of southeast England, meanwhile Scotland is under a yellow warning, with 123 flood alerts and 172 flood warnings still active across England.
Flood Risk Still Looms After Weekend Deluge
Sarah Cook from the Environment Agency says crews will be battling floodwaters in the worst-hit zones on Monday. “Sunday night’s rain in the south could trigger minor flooding in isolated spots,” she warns. “Stay clear of swollen rivers and don’t drive through flood water.”
Drivers Urged to Beware Icy Roads
RAC’s Rod Dennis says, “Ice now poses the biggest threat to drivers after last week’s floods.” He urges motorists to take it slow, especially on untreated rural roads. “Although this cold snap is shorter than December’s freeze — which saw RAC’s busiest week ever — vigilance is key,” he stresses.
Meanwhile, in York, rescue teams had to use boats to navigate flooded streets over the weekend, highlighting the ongoing severity of the conditions.
