UK on edge as snow, ice and heavy rain wreak havoc

Heavy Snowstorm Smacks Northern England and Scotland

The UK is battling a brutal mix of snow, ice, and torrential rain. Northern England and Scotland face continuing snowfall amid Amber severe weather warnings. Meanwhile, the south deals with milder, wetter conditions raising flood alarms.

By 11 a.m. Sunday, Bingley in West Yorkshire was buried under 17cm of snow, with Shap, Cumbria recording 10cm. Snow blankets most of England and Wales, except the far south where warmer air has crept in overnight.

The Met Office warns that heavy snow will hammer the Pennines throughout Sunday, keeping northern England under an Amber alert until midnight. Scotland and Northern Ireland remain on Yellow alert for ongoing snow showers and icy conditions.

Frozen North, Mild South: UK Temperature Divide Deepens

A dramatic temperature gap splits the country. While the Isles of Scilly enjoy a mild 13.2°C, parts of Scotland plunge to a bone-chilling -11.1°C at Loch Glascarnoch overnight. Expect a sharp 6-9°C swing over just 50 miles in the northern Midlands.

Flood Threat Rises as Snow Melts into Torrential Rain

The southern half of the UK now faces rising flood risks. Milder air turning snow into heavy rain over already saturated ground threatens widespread flooding.

The Environment Agency has issued flood warnings, especially for Lancashire and Warwickshire, with minor flooding possible elsewhere. Flood Duty Manager Sarah Cook urgently advised:

“A combination of melting snow and rain may lead to the possibility of significant river flooding. We advise people to stay away from swollen rivers and not to drive through flood water, as just 30cm of flowing water can move a car.”

Cold Snap Returns Next Week – More Snow Possible

After Sunday’s storm passes, a blast of cold northerly air will sweep the UK next week. Frost and below-average temperatures will return, with some areas struggling to rise above freezing for days.

Deputy Chief Forecaster Mike Silverstone said:

“As the low-pressure system moves east, cold air will sweep back across the UK, leading to a return of below-freezing temperatures, particularly in the north. Some areas may struggle to get above freezing for several days.”

Forecasters warn of possible snow hitting southern and central England and Wales midweek – though the outlook remains uncertain. Stay tuned for potential new weather warnings.
