Brighton Seafront Chiefs Warn: Stay Safe This Winter!
As the festive season draws near, Brighton & Hove Council’s Seafront Officers are urging visitors to stay alert and safe while enjoying the chilly winter beaches.
Keep Kids Close and Stick to the Path
David Wheeler, Acting Seafront Operations Manager, says: “Enjoy your walks along the promenade, but always stay on the path or higher up the beach when the sea is rough.” He stresses the dangers of large waves that can sweep people, especially children, into the icy waters. “Hold your children’s hands. Smaller, younger visitors are most at risk.”
Think Twice Before Taking a Christmas Dip
Open-water swimming is booming, with groups gathering for festive dips. But David warns only seasoned swimmers should take the plunge. “Cold water swimming is no joke. You need skills, stamina, and the right wetsuit. Always swim with friends and in calm conditions.”
He adds, “Even calm seas can hide deadly currents or sudden weather shifts. Never swim in clothes, and never after drinking alcohol—it’s a recipe for disaster and hypothermia.”
No Lifeguards on Duty – Emergency Services Stretched
Visitors should note there’s no lifeguard patrol during winter. Anyone caught in trouble puts extra pressure on emergency crews, including HM Coastguard and the lifeboat service.
Brighton’s steep shingle beach makes water entry tough, especially at high tide. David warns, “Strong winds plus steep slopes equals a serious risk of being swept out to sea.” Always check conditions, know the limits of your group, and don’t take risks.
If you see anyone in danger or attempting a risky swim, call 999 immediately and ask for the coastguard.
