New North East Lockdown Blitz to Tackle Soaring Covid Cases
The North East is about to face tougher Covid restrictions as infection rates skyrocket. From Friday 18 September, the government is cracking down hard across Northumberland, North Tyneside, Newcastle, Gateshead, South Tyneside, Sunderland, and County Durham.
Strict New Rules to Hit Social Life and Nightlife
- No socialising in private homes or gardens with anyone outside your household or support bubble.
- Hospitality venues must switch to table service only – no standing at the bar.
- Nightlife takes a hit with venues forced to shut between 10pm and 5am.
Official guidance has also been ramped up:
- Avoid mixing with anyone outside your household in public places.
- Use public transport only for essentials like work or school.
- Holiday plans should be kept strictly within your household bubble.
- Skip amateur and semi-pro sports matches as a spectator.
Why the Clampdown?
The North East now has the second highest Covid infection rate in England, just behind the North West. Local leaders pushed for stronger controls, and the government listened.
Matt Hancock’s Warning
“After seeing cases in the North East rise to a concerning level, local authorities requested support for tighter restrictions and we have taken swift action to accept their recommendations.
We do not take these decisions lightly but I know the people of the North East will work together and break the chains of transmission.
I urge those from affected areas: please, get a 1 if you have symptoms, stay home if you need to self-isolate, and remember: hands, face, space. This is the only way to get back to normal and avoid more restrictions.”
What’s Next?
These new rules come on top of the nationwide six-person gathering limit introduced earlier this week. The Health and Social Care Secretary, NHS Test and Trace, and the Joint Biosecurity Centre will keep a close eye on infection trends. Measures will be reviewed regularly to protect public health and save lives.
