Braverman Quits With Blast at Government Direction
Home Secretary Suella Braverman has thrown in the towel. In a no-nonsense resignation letter to Prime Minister Liz Truss, she admitted, “I have made a mistake; I accept responsibility; I resign.” But she didn’t stop there, voicing sharp “concerns about this government’s direction.”
Braverman, a right-wing firebrand who campaigned on slashing immigration and chopping taxes and spending, only landed the Home Secretary role on September 6th. She was promoted from Attorney General under Boris Johnson after running for Conservative Party leadership.
Dreams of Deporting Migrants to Rwanda
The bombshell resignation follows her fiery remarks at the Tory Conference in Birmingham, where she called a migrant flight to Rwanda her “dream” and “obsession.
Her exit piles more pressure on Truss, already reeling after Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng’s stunning sacking. His disastrous mini-budget spooked the markets and shook the government to its core. Truss even pulled out of a factory visit with no clear reason, citing only “government business.”
Grant Shapps Returns as Home Secretary
Stepping into Braverman’s shoes is none other than Grant Shapps, a known supporter of Rishi Sunak in the recent Tory leadership battle. Shapps was controversially fired by Truss as Transport Secretary, replaced by Anne-Marie Trevelyan. Now, he’s back, tasked with steadying the ship at Home Office while Truss fights to keep her premiership alive.
