Surrey Council Snaps Up New Head for Children’s Services
Surrey County Council has named Rachael Wardell as its new Executive Director of Children, Families and Lifelong Learning. She steps into the role this December, taking over a key position after the sudden departure of her predecessor, Dave Hill.
Experienced Leader Joins Surrey
Rachael arrives from the London Borough of Merton, where she was Director of Children, Schools and Families. Before that, she spent five years at West Berkshire Council as Director of Children’s Services and Director of Adult Social Services. She also boasts experience with a borough council and Ofsted.
Council Bosses Back Rachael’s Vision
Joanna Killian, Surrey’s Chief Executive, hailed Rachael’s appointment as “pivotal” for the council’s service transformation. She said,
“Rachael is committed to continuing the vision the Council has set and will build on the excellent work of everyone in the Directorate. She will provide leadership, focus and passion in our improvement journey.”
Speaking about Dave Hill’s legacy, Joanna added,
“It has never been more important to focus on the happiness and wellbeing of our young people. Dave left an enormous legacy, but Rachael, who knew him well, will push forward his passion for ensuring all children are loved, cherished, and supported to thrive.”
Rachael Vows to Build on Dave’s Work
Rachael said,
“To be offered the opportunity of continuing the work Dave started is a huge personal privilege. Like many others, I was inspired by his approach, and I’m excited to improve the wellbeing and opportunities for every child in Surrey.”
SCC Leader Tim Oliver called the appointment “crucial” and praised Rachael’s commitment to enhancing children’s services and unlocking young people’s potential.
