Surrey Council Slams ULEZ Expansion Plan
Surrey’s council has blasted the Mayor’s Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) expansion, warning it will hit local communities and businesses hard. Elmbridge, Epsom and Ewell, and Spelthorne are among the areas flagged as facing serious financial strain.
Council Demands Action, But Gets Silence
In July 2022, Surrey pushed for changes to soften the blow. Their demands included:
- Extending the car scrappage scheme to Surrey residents
- Widening the Zone 6 Oyster Card coverage
- Exemptions for key workers, students, and taxi drivers
- More funding for active travel and public transport
- Clearer signage along boundaries
But so far, the Mayor and Transport for London (TfL) have ignored these calls.
Surrey Holds Up ULEZ Warning Signs
Surrey County Council controls where advanced ULEZ warning signs can be installed. They’ve refused to cooperate with TfL or the Mayor on practical rollout plans until real talks happen about helping Surrey residents cope with the changes.
The standoff leaves locals in limbo and the ULEZ expansion plan hanging in the balance.
