British Woman Missing After Thai Tour Boat Capsizes
The UK Foreign Office is backing the family of Millie Young, a 57-year-old Brit from Brighton, after a scuba diving tour boat reportedly capsized off Thailand’s coast.
Chaos Off Ko Torinla Island
The incident happened near Ko Torinla Island in the Andaman Sea. Millie Young and a female Thai crew member vanished after the boat, named “Reggae Queen,” went down. The dive tour, run by Sawan Tour, had about 18 passengers. Thankfully, 16 were rescued.
Race Against Time With Strong Currents Hampering Rescue
Local authorities launched a massive search with inflatable boats and a helicopter. But fierce currents could have dragged the missing pair up to 111 kilometres away. Rear Admiral Pongmit Narongkul, leading the rescue, said:
“The wind in the area is quite strong, which is an obstacle to the search. There are cargo and fishing ships in the area, and they have been instructed to continue searching at night until the missing people are found.”
Remote Location Makes Rescue Tough
Ko Torinla Island sits within the Surin Islands National Park, a cluster of five islands about 55 kilometres from Thailand’s mainland. The remote location and rough seas make the hunt for Millie and the crew member all the more urgent.
