Death Toll Rises as Tornadoes Tear Through Multiple States
Deadly tornadoes have ripped through several US states, killing at least 12 people and destroying homes, schools, and churches. Arkansas was hit hardest, with five fatalities, closely followed by Tennessee where seven lost their lives. Families across the region face heartbreak and homelessness as the death toll continues to climb.
Communities Shattered – Power Outages Hit Over Half a Million
In Arkansas’s Little Rock, a strong tornado obliterated familiar landmarks. Salon owner Heidi Jenkins from Wynne spoke to the Washington Post: “I’m sad that my town has been hit so hard.” She lost both her church and school in the storm. More than 590,000 are now without electricity, with Ohio and pennsylvania/" title="Pennsylvania" data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">Pennsylvania among the worst affected.
Emergency Declared as Federal Aid Rolls In
Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders declared a state of emergency and mobilised the National Guard to aid recovery. She has also spoken to President Joe Biden, who promised federal assistance. The tornadoes overturned vehicles, uprooted trees, and knocked down power lines, leaving infrastructure in ruins.
More Storms May Be Coming
This tragedy follows last week’s rare, devastating Mississippi tornado that killed 26 people. President Biden visited Mississippi to offer condolences. The Storm Prediction Center warns residents to stay alert for more severe weather, including violent thunderstorms, strong winds, and hail.
