Chaos at Manston: Migrants Forced to Sleep on Floors in Overcrowded UK Centre
Horrific Conditions Exposed at Manston
New reports reveal shocking conditions inside the Manston immigration holding centre. Inmates cannot fully close lavatory doors and are forced to sleep on bare floors. Some migrants have waited over 30 hours just to be processed, while others are denied access to mobile phones to notify family they are safe.
Originally built for 1,000 people, Manston now jams around 4,000 migrants—more than any UK prison.
No Mattresses, No Fresh Air, No Relief
Despite having basic food, water, baths, and toilets, detainees have no mattresses or access to exercise or fresh air. The facility is designed for short stays of up to 24 hours during paperwork processing, but overcrowding has stretched it beyond capacity.
Home Secretary Under Fire
Suella Braverman faces a barrage of criticism for the crisis. She denies ignoring legal advice to move migrants from Manston to hotels, claiming she’s “worked hard” to find extra accommodation since early September. However, she blames the situation on a Channel “invasion” and says illegal migration is “out of control.”
Calls for Urgent Action
Chief Inspector of Prisons Charlie Taylor slammed the government, demanding faster immigration processing and proper housing to swiftly relocate detainees. Speaking on BBC Radio 4, he said:
“The Home Office and contractors need to get a grip. They must speed up immigration processing and create enough accommodation so people can be moved off-site quickly and housed with dignity.”
Health checks are carried out at separate sites, like Dover and Lydd Airport, but inspections found Manston’s overcrowding and staff shortages seriously undermine its ability to cope. Still, inspectors praised staff for maintaining a calm atmosphere amid the chaos.
Backbenchers Decry Health Risks
Conservative MP Sir Roger Gale condemned the situation as “wholly unacceptable,” especially considering outbreaks of MRSA and diphtheria in the centre.
