Island Ambulance Service Thanks Lifesaving Allies

The Isle of Wight Ambulance Service has publicly thanked its heroic partners for unwavering support through a tough year. A presentation ceremony honoured St. John Ambulance, Hovertravel, Hampshire and IOW Fire and Rescue Service, and the Military for stepping up when it mattered most.

Unbreakable Island Unity in Crisis

Joe Smyth, IOW NHS Trust Chief Operating Officer, praised the community spirit: “The Ambulance service said ‘we need some help’ and partners instantly replied ‘we’re on our way’. The Island community really looks out for each other. This is a personal thank you for that incredible support.”

Victoria White, Head of Ambulance, recalled the pandemic’s dark start and how rescue services banded together: “At the pandemic’s outset, Hampshire and IOW Fire and Rescue offered help. St. John Ambulance was already aiding services nationwide. When the Air Ambulance couldn’t fly untested COVID patients, we teamed up with Hovertravel to create an Island rescue service — a true lifeline.”

She added, “January’s soaring infections hit us hard, and we faced high sickness. That’s when we called on mutual aid from St John Ambulance, Hampshire Fire and Rescue, and the Military to fill critical gaps. Their help was vital and delivered with exemplary professionalism.”

Partners Speak Out: ‘Easy to Work Together’

  • Sean Harrison, Hampshire & IOW Fire and Rescue Station Manager: “Coordinating with NHS and Ambulance teams was fantastic. When help was needed, we flipped the switch. Training was spot on, risks assessed, and the partnership just flowed smoothly.”
  • Lt Colonel Mike Dyos, Joint Military Command South East: “Supporting the NHS during the pandemic was a complex but rewarding challenge. It showed our forces’ adaptability and has left a lasting impact on their careers — many are now considering NHS roles post-service.”
  • Neil Chapman, Managing Director, Hovertravel: “Working with the NHS has been a dream. Helping the local community through COVID and now recovery is core to our business and mission.”
  • Richard Lyons, Ambulance Locality Manager for Hampshire & IOW St John Ambulance: “Our crews jumped at the chance to help. The collaboration has been vital and built strong NHS relationships.”

Historic Moment Captured in Pictures and Art

Each partner received a framed group photograph to mark this historic alliance. The Hampshire and IOW Fire and Rescue Service also gifted a heartfelt drawing bearing the message “We’ve got your back,” which now proudly hangs in the Isle of Wight Ambulance Station.
