British Soldier Among Four Missing After Heading to Ukraine
The Ministry of Defence has confirmed a 19-year-old Coldstream Guardsman is one of up to four missing British soldiers feared to have travelled to Ukraine amid the ongoing conflict with Russia.
MoD Bans All Travel to Ukraine — No Exceptions
A MoD spokesman warned sharply: “All service personnel are prohibited from travelling to Ukraine until further notice. This applies whether the service person is on leave or not. Personnel travelling to Ukraine will face disciplinary and administrative consequences.” The MoD declined to comment on specific cases.
According to The Sun, the teenage Guardsman, based at Windsor Barracks, penned a goodbye letter to his parents and bought a ticket to Poland last weekend, hoping to cross into Ukraine. This defies official UK military rules, which ban any service member from travelling to Ukraine.
Why Brits Are Warned Against Joining Ukraine Fight
- UK law may prosecute anyone helping fight or assist combatants in Ukraine.
- The British government has limited consular support inside Ukraine, making assistance unlikely.
- UK defence chiefs understand the desire to help but stress their support remains defensive and indirect.
Defence Secretary Ben Wallace, a former Scots Guardsman, has pleaded with Britons not to go to Ukraine, calling the situation “very dangerous” and warning that volunteers risk getting killed.
“I do not want to see British people killed any more than I want to see Ukrainians dying,” Wallace said.
Mixed Messages From UK Leaders
The confusion deepened when Foreign Secretary Liz Truss earlier vowed she would “absolutely” support Brits opting to fight in Ukraine. But Downing Street quickly stepped back. An official spokesman for Prime Minister Boris Johnson said:
“We think the best way we can help Ukraine right now is by ensuring Putin fails. There are a number of ways Brits can show their support for that, and the Ukrainian embassy is putting out information about how British people can help.”
“We fully recognise the strength of feeling about British people wanting to support the Ukrainians following the Russian invasion. There’s advice up on travelling to Ukraine; we currently advise against travel to Ukraine.”
For now, the MoD remains firm: No British soldiers are to travel to Ukraine under any circumstances.
