Think speeding is harmless? Think again. Hampshire and Thames Valley roads policing officers are joining a massive European crackdown on speeding next week. The Joint Roads Policing Unit is set to enforce limits hard from August 21 for a full week.
Europe-Wide Speed Trap Kicks Off
The campaign, organised by Tispol – the European Traffic Police Network – aims to crack down on all speed offenders. Officers will target anyone going over the limit or driving too fast for conditions. The goal? To save lives and stop deadly crashes.

Smash a pedestrian at 40mph, and they’ve just a 10% chance of survival. Drop that speed to 30mph, and chances soar to 80%. Those numbers tell a brutal story about how deadly speeding really is.
Speeding contributes to 20% of all fatal crashes, 12% of serious injuries, and 10% of total casualties in the Joint Operations Unit region.
‘Speeding Wrecks Lives,’ Warns Sergeant Rob Heard
“Just a few miles over the limit can cause catastrophic crashes. Families suffer lifelong pain from losing loved ones or dealing with serious injuries,” said Road Safety Sergeant Rob Heard.
“Speeding cuts your reaction time and increases stopping distance. Remember, the speed limit isn’t a target – it’s the maximum. Drive slower if the road or weather demands it.
“We’ll keep cracking down on speeders, including goods vehicles. Many commercial drivers obey limits, but too many van drivers ignore specific lower speed restrictions. We’ve even made handy graphics to help them remember.”
