Boris Flags Danger for Over-60s as UK Lockdown Looms
Boris Johnson has warned the over-60s to be extra cautious as new coronavirus rules kick in across England this Thursday. His spokesperson said, “The over 60s should take extra care because there is evidence they could be at greater risk of becoming seriously ill.”
The fresh scientific advice reveals that those aged 60 and above face a higher risk of severe illness from coronavirus. This updates previous guidance that mainly focused on the over-70s and clinically vulnerable.
UK Hits Half a Million Daily Tests but Usage Falls Short
The government has proudly announced hitting its target of 500,000 coronavirus tests a day by the end of October. On October 31, capacity topped 525,000 tests—a huge leap from two months ago. Yet, fewer than 300,000 tests were actually used.
Officials explained that labs don’t always run at full throttle, needing room to tackle staff or equipment issues and sudden spikes in demand. This testing boost is part of the ambitious “Test and Trace” expansion set by ministers in the summer.
Universities Urge Students: Don’t Flee for Lockdown
Universities in England are pleading with students to stay put for the upcoming lockdown, even if courses switch online. They fear a mass exodus could worsen virus spread.
The National Union of Students disagrees, insisting students should be allowed to return home safely before restrictions hit. Government guidance recommends teaching to be moved online where possible, but Universities UK says a mix of face-to-face and online lessons will continue throughout lockdown.
Spain Shatters Records with 55,000 New COVID Cases in One Day

Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez warned the real infection tally could top 3 million, far above the official 1.24 million, blaming a three-day bank holiday delay in reporting.
