Tragedy on the River Wear: 20-Year-Old Woman Dies in Kayaking Horror

A 20-year-old woman has died after a kayaking accident on the River Wear in Barnard Castle. Emergency crews were scrambled just before 2pm following reports of a kayaker in distress.

Massive Rescue Mission Ends in Heartbreak

Durham Police confirmed the grim news: “We’re sorry to report that a body has been recovered from the River Wear this afternoon.”

The major operation saw the County Durham & Darlington Fire & Rescue Service, North East Ambulance Service, Great North Air Ambulance, Coastguard, and the Teesdale and Weardale Search and Mountain Rescue Team all involved.

Despite the intense efforts, the young woman’s body was sadly found just after 4pm.

Police have now informed the victim’s family, who are being given specialist support to cope with their tragic loss.
