Tribute to Dave Rowland, Founder of Beloved Gosport Memories Group
It’s with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Dave Rowland, founder of the hugely popular Gosport Area Memories and Photos Past and Present Facebook group. Dave died peacefully at home yesterday, leaving a huge void in the local community.
From Small Start to Massive Local Hit
Five years ago, Dave kicked off the group with just a couple of his own photos and an idea: bring friends together to share memories and images of Gosport, past and present. Within weeks, 500 people had joined – and Dave was stunned by the response.
The group quickly ballooned, becoming THE place for Gosport locals to connect. Yes, there were fiery debates and breakaway factions focusing on everything from local history to community events, ads, politics, lost and found, and even good old-fashioned moaning.
Uniting Gosport – Near and Far
Whatever the focus, every Facebook group in Gosport can trace its roots back to Dave’s brainchild. His group linked locals near and far – including those who’d moved abroad – reconnecting them with their hometown through memories and current news.
Dave was often moved by messages from members living lonely lives who found comfort and company in the group. For many, it was a lifeline that helped them feel valued and connected.
A Local Legend with a Sharp Wit
Dave wasn’t just a curator of memories – he was a font of local history knowledge, especially when it came to trains and pubs. His razor-sharp wit, brilliant storytelling, and great humour made him a beloved figure online and offline.
He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
“Dave’s group gave people company and made them feel part of something good.”
