Three fire engines and 15 firefighters rushed to a London flat after a fire broke out last night. Crews wearing breathing apparatus rescued two men trapped on the first floor. Both were checked by London Ambulance Service at the scene.
Unattended Cooking Blamed for Flat Fire
The fire partially damaged the flat and is believed to have been sparked by cooking left unattended. Firefighters quickly brought the blaze under control within 23 minutes of arriving.
London Fire Brigade Urges Caution in the Kitchen
“Never leave cooking unattended on the cooker or hob. You should have working smoke alarms in every room where a fire can start, plus a heat alarm in the kitchen and the bathroom. They should be tested regularly,” warned a London Fire Brigade spokesperson.
Fire Safety Tips from the Brigade
- Don’t leave cooking unattended. If you leave the kitchen, turn off the heat.
- If you’re tired, drunk, or on medication that causes drowsiness, order a takeaway instead.
- Keep ovens, hobs, cooker hoods, extractor fans, and grills clean to prevent grease fires.
- Always double-check that your cooker and hob are switched off after use.
The Brigade was called at 9:07pm, with crews from Lambeth, Dowgate, and Brixton stations swiftly containing the fire by 9:30pm.
