Hero Cops Save Woman From Suicide on Busy Bridge

On New Year’s Eve, PCs Matt Leask and Rich Reynolds spotted a desperate woman hanging off Tinsley Bridge, Eastwood. Quick-thinking and calm, they talked her down and brought her to safety.

Deadly Danger on Busy A610 Road

Tinsley Bridge towers above the A610, a major road linking Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire where cars speed at 70mph. A jumper here not only risks their own life but could cause horrific crashes below.

Blockades and Support Signs to Stop Suicide Attempts

Following the rescue, the officers pushed hard for safety measures. Between April 2021 and April 2023, at least 31 suicide attempts happened on the bridge. Working with Broxtowe Borough Council and highways, they helped install barriers and signs directing vulnerable people to support services.

“She was not very happy, had a low mood and was suicidal,” says PC Leask. “We calmed her down and kept her safe. After that, we knew more had to be done to protect the people of Eastwood and the motorists below.”

PC Reynolds added: “We’ve attended multiple suicide attempts here. These barriers and signs will hopefully stop people heading to the bridge and help them find the support they need.”

Community Praise for Officers’ Life-Saving Work

Neighbourhood Inspector Mike Ebbins said: “This spot is a known suicide risk. PCs Leask and Reynolds have worked tirelessly to get preventative measures in place. Their dedication shows the heart of neighbourhood policing — keeping the public safe at their most vulnerable.”

Tinsley Bridge is finally getting the protection it badly needed, thanks to two officers who won’t give up on saving lives.
