Teens Busted with Nearly 2,000 Canisters of Nitrous Oxide in Whitstable
Two teenagers from Herne Bay have been arrested for allegedly dealing psychoactive substances in Whitstable. The 19-year-old and 17-year-old were caught red-handed just after 10pm on Friday, 13 July in Plough Lane, Swalecliffe by Canterbury Community Policing Team officers.
Suspicious Behaviour Leads to Big Drug Bust
Police on foot patrol spotted two cars with occupants acting suspiciously. One person was seen clutching multiple boxes of nitrous oxide — a legal yet dangerous substance often misused for a quick high.
Massive Haul Seized Under Psychoactive Substances Act
Both teens and their vehicles were searched under the Psychoactive Substances Act 2016. Officers seized a staggering 1,824 nitrous oxide canisters, along with cash, mobile phones, and balloons used for inhaling. Both suspects have since been released under investigation.
Police Warn of Deadly Risks of Nitrous Oxide Abuse
“People misusing nitrous oxide should be aware that because it deprives the body of oxygen, it can be fatal when taken in excess,” said Detective Constable Allison Bridges. “The risk spikes if the gas is used rapidly or in enclosed spaces. It may cause users to lose awareness, pass out, or collapse. It can trigger heart attacks and long-term health problems. Drinking alcohol alongside nitrous oxide only worsens the dangers.”
Police urge anyone with concerns about nitrous oxide use to contact their local Police Community Support Officer or call Kent Police on 101.
