UK Braces for Surge in Grass Pollen Levels, Hay Fever Alert Issued

Hay fever sufferers across the UK are being urged to brace themselves for a challenging end to the week as grass pollen levels are anticipated to soar. The country has been put on notice for an impending “pollen bomb,” triggered by the release of pent-up pollen following weeks of rainfall.

A warning issued by the National Pollen Aerobiology Research Unit has highlighted a high risk of grass pollen across the South, Midlands, East Anglia, South Wales, and parts of the North. This risk is expected to escalate to very high levels with the onset of warmer weather, with moderate levels anticipated in the North of England and North Wales until June 3. Conversely, Scotland, the far North of England, and Northern Ireland are expected to experience low levels for the time being.

The Met Office has corroborated these forecasts, indicating that grass pollen levels will surge as a spell of settled weather takes hold.

Hay fever, affecting roughly half of the British population, stands as one of the most prevalent allergies in the country.

In response to this imminent pollen surge, Tyler Woodward, CEO of Eden’s Gate, has offered seven top tips to help tackle hay fever:

  1. Wearing Wraparound Sunglasses: Shielding the eyes from pollen, dust, and other allergens in the air, wraparound sunglasses offer both protection and UV shielding.
  2. Closing windows: Preventing pollen from entering the home, keeping windows closed can maintain a consistent indoor air temperature, aiding breathing.
  3. Quitting Smoking: Reducing air pollution and inflammation, quitting smoking can alleviate hay fever symptoms by improving air quality.
  4. CBD: Known for its anti-inflammatory properties, CBD can ease nasal and throat inflammation, reducing allergy symptoms.
  5. Applying Vaseline Around the Nose: Acting as a barrier, Vaseline traps pollen and keeps the nose moisturized, minimizing irritation.
  6. Regular Vacuuming: By clearing dust and allergens from the air, regular vacuuming can alleviate hay fever symptoms, especially when done in diagonal and zigzag motions to ensure thorough cleaning.
  7. Using Anti-Pollen Fresheners in Vehicles: Employing anti-pollen air fresheners in cars can help prevent pollen from reaching the nose and eyes, enhancing comfort during travel.

As grass pollen levels surge, implementing these strategies can offer relief to hay fever sufferers, enabling them to better manage their symptoms during this challenging period.
