Starmer Unveils £975M Boost for UK Aerospace
Prime Minister Keir Starmer has launched a massive £975 million injection into the UK aerospace industry over the next five years. The move aims to safeguard thousands of skilled jobs and push Britain to the forefront of aerospace innovation.
Key Hubs to Lead Tech Revolution
The cash will flow through the Aerospace Technology Institute (ATI) Programme, backing innovation centres in Broughton, Filton, and Derby. With aerospace contributing nearly £40 billion to the UK economy last year, this investment promises to turbocharge new technology and create fresh job opportunities nationwide.
“The UK’s aerospace industry is truly world-class. By accelerating our investment, we will unlock the tech of the future and take a crucial step forward in our mission to deliver growth and opportunity across our country.” – Prime Minister Keir Starmer
Wales to Get £49 Million Boost
Wales, a vital aerospace hub employing over 20,000 people, will receive £49 million to support cutting-edge projects. Along with the Southwest, Wales handles around half of the world’s large civil aircraft wing design and assembly.
“Our world-class aerospace sector added almost £40 billion to the economy last year. This funding will ensure the UK can continue to pioneer new technologies.” – Business and Trade Secretary Jonathan Reynolds
Airbus UK Chairman John Harrison hailed the announcement, saying it offers “certainty for long-term sustainable aviation investment and highly skilled jobs.” Meanwhile, Welsh First Minister Eluned Morgan said, “Wales is a cornerstone of the UK’s Aerospace industry.”
Bid Opens in January – Projects Kick Off This Autumn
The government will open the bidding process in January, with projects set to start by autumn. This injection aligns perfectly with the Industrial Strategy and Net Zero targets, while also boosting the RAF and Royal Navy’s defence capabilities.
