UK Government Cracks Down on Secret Land Trust Ownership
The UK government is stepping up to tackle corruption and secrecy in the property sector by launching a consultation to make land trusts and their owners more transparent.
Shining a Light on Hidden Property Owners
Land ownership via trusts often hides the real beneficiaries behind layers of legal management. Many of these beneficiaries remain anonymous, creating a breeding ground for shady dealings. The government’s new plan aims to give the public, media, and residents full access to who controls land, property, and the money behind it.
Ministers Push for Fairer Housing Markets
Housing Secretary Michael Gove stressed the need for transparency: “Transparency about land ownership is crucial if we want to make our housing and land markets fairer. In its absence, injustices, corruption, and crime can flourish.”
Minister for Enterprise, Kevin Hollinrake welcomed the move, highlighting the government’s fight against fraud and illicit activity in the property scene. The consultation also aims to widen access to the Register of Overseas Entities, aiming to expose dodgy buyers hiding behind offshore trusts.
Fighting Money Laundering and Fraud
The proposals focus on making information from public registers freely and easily available. These moves are key to cracking down on offshore trusts linked to money laundering risks in UK property.
The consultation will run for eight weeks, inviting the public and stakeholders to weigh in. This bold initiative backs the Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Act 2023, designed to boost trust transparency and clamp down on financial crime.
