Could You Snag a TV Licence Refund Up to £169.50?
Every UK household must legally hold a TV licence to watch or record live TV – no matter the channel. But here’s a twist: many Brits could claim back up to £169.50 if they meet certain conditions. Are you one of them?
Who Can Get a Refund?
If you don’t watch or record live TV, nor stream BBC iPlayer, you might be eligible for a TV licence refund. To qualify, you must:
- Have at least one full month left on your licence
- Not need the licence again before its expiry
If that sounds like you, it’s time to check if you can claim!
How to Claim Your TV Licence Money Back
Applying is simple. Head over to the TV Licensing website and complete the refund process. Expect the refund within 21 days—unless extra info is needed, which could delay things.
How Much Will You Get?
Your refund depends on how many unused months remain on your licence—anywhere from 1 to 11 months. Remember, less than one full unused month means no refund.
TV Licensing warns: “You won’t be eligible if there is less than one month between the cancellation and expiry dates. Also, if you haven’t paid in full, your licence expiry date may be adjusted accordingly.”
Refunds arrive either by cheque or straight to your bank via BACS transfer.
When Do You Actually Need a TV Licence?
Grab a licence if you:
- Watch or record live TV on any channel or service
- Use BBC iPlayer
You don’t need one if you only watch:
- Streaming services like Netflix and Disney Plus
- On-demand TV via All 4 or Amazon Prime Video
- Pre-recorded videos or DVDs
