UK Braces for Milder, Drier Spell – But Scotland Faces Wet Shake-Up

The UK’s weather is about to take a dramatic turn. A northward shift of the jet stream is set to push high pressure over much of the country, bringing a welcome stretch of drier, milder conditions. But don’t pack away your brollies just yet—western Scotland, which’s been surprisingly dry this month, is in for a soggy shock.

Wet and Windy Days Move East as High Pressure Rises

The low pressure system behind recent wet and blustery weather will scoot eastwards by Wednesday, clearing the way for high pressure to take charge. This means most regions can expect drier skies and a break from the rain battering the south and east.

Met Office Forecast: Warm Air and Mild Nights on the Way

Paul Gundersen, Met Office Chief Forecaster, says, “The high pressure will draw up warmer air from the southwest, leading to milder conditions by both day and night for all.”

He adds the Foehn effect will crank temperatures up, especially in east Scotland. “You can expect particularly mild weather there,” Gundersen noted.

Looking Ahead: Unsettled Weather Near Christmas?

The mild run is likely to stick around until mid-next week, though some rain could hit northern and northwest regions. But the real question is Christmas. Early signs suggest the jet stream may slide south, ushering in more unsettled weather.

Gundersen warns this could bring northwesterly winds, drop temperatures a touch, and possibly deliver wintry showers in the north. However, he stresses, “At this stage, there is very little sign of any widespread or severe cold and wintry weather.”

Bottom line: Expect mild but mixed conditions over the coming days. Keep an eye on the forecast—you never know when those rain clouds might roll back in.
