Campaigners and experts have blasted the government’s new plan to tag some asylum seekers as harsh and unfair. They warn it criminalises people fleeing danger, pushing a policy with no proof it will boost compliance.
Electronic Tags for Asylum Seekers on Dangerous Routes
New Home Office rules reveal a 12-month pilot to fit electronic tags on asylum seekers arriving via risky and unnecessary routes. Shockingly, this could include victims of torture and trafficking.
If tagged individuals break the conditions, they face detention, arrest, or even prosecution.
Rwanda Deportation Chaos Fuels Backlash
The move comes hot on the heels of the government’s failed Rwanda deportation flight. Judges blocked the flight on human rights grounds, forcing a last-minute cancellation. Many of the 130 detained for deportation could be first in line for tagging once released.
Refugee Council CEO Labels Plan ‘Appalling’
“It is appalling that this government is determined to treat men, women, and children who have fled war, bloodshed, and persecution as criminals,” said Enver Solomon, CEO of the Refugee Council.
“This draconian and punitive approach shows no compassion for the most vulnerable and fails to deter those desperate for safety in the UK.”
