Sainsbury’s Stands Firm on Safety as Mask Rules Ease
Masks Remain ‘Encouraged’ Despite Rule Changes
Sainsbury’s is keeping safety front and centre as England lifts mandatory face-covering rules on 19th July. While wearing a mask will now be a personal choice, the supermarket giant is urging shoppers to keep them on wherever possible.
Staff will also be encouraged to wear face coverings unless protected by screens, and all leadership teams will continue to don masks during store visits.
Plastic Screens and Sanitiser Stations Stay Put
Not all safety measures are going away. Sainsbury’s will phase out some screens between self-service checkouts but will keep barriers in place between customers and colleagues at manned tills. Hand sanitiser stations remain across all stores, alongside rigorous trolley and basket cleaning routines and overnight deep cleans.
Chief Exec Sends Clear Message on Safety
“Our colleagues’ safety is vital, and many would feel more comfortable if shoppers continued to wear face coverings. We’ve listened closely to customers, and most want these measures to stay,” said Simon Roberts, Sainsbury’s Chief Executive.
“While it’s a personal choice to wear masks now, we urge everyone to be considerate. Together we can keep helping and protecting each other in the months ahead.”
Sainsbury’s approach reflects extensive customer and staff feedback, showing a majority still want masks to remain part of the shopping experience. Safety might be easing up officially, but the retailer isn’t taking any chances.
