600 Patients to Move as West Midlands Opens Fancy New Hospital

The West Midlands Ambulance Service (WMAS) is gearing up to shuttle around 600 patients to the spanking new Midland Metropolitan University Hospital (MMUH). The moves will happen over three separate days next month, marking a major milestone for healthcare in the region.

Transfer Dates Set as MMUH Opens Its Doors

The new hospital officially opens to the public on Sunday, October 6. That same day, WMAS will kick off patient transfers by moving roughly 300 patients from Sandwell Hospital to MMUH.

The next wave comes on Wednesday, November 6, when 60 maternity patients from City Hospital will be relocated. The grand finale happens on Sunday, November 10, with about 220 more patients making the switch from City Hospital to the new site.

Fleet of 60 Ambulances Ready for the Big Move

To pull off this mammoth task, WMAS will deploy 60 ambulances, including emergency vehicles and patient transport ambulances. Crucially, these are extra to the usual fleet, so everyday 999 service won’t miss a beat.

“A lot of hard work has gone into this project over the last nine months to ensure we are fully prepared,” said James Williams, WMAS Head of Emergency Preparedness, Resilience and Response. “We have worked closely with Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals to make sure the transfers are efficient and safe.”

Williams praised staff for their experience and dedication, highlighting the extra shifts taken to nail the smooth operation of transfer days. Every patient will get tailored care depending on their condition during the move.

New Hospital Promises Better Healthcare for West Midlands

The MMUH is a much-anticipated upgrade, bringing modern facilities to patients and staff. Consolidating services from across the region, it aims to boost healthcare quality and access.

Authorities have asked the public to be patient during the transfer days, warning that ambulance activity will be higher than usual around the area.
