West Midlands Firefighters Rush to Storm-Ravaged Malawi

West Midlands Fire Service (WMFS) has sprung into action, deploying a 27-strong flood response team to Malawi. They’re part of the UK International Search and Rescue (UK ISAR) effort tackling the chaos left by devastating storms.

Storm Freddy Strikes Twice, Malawi Declares Disaster

The Malawian government, battered by Storm Freddy’s second strike this month, declared a state of disaster across 10 southern districts. With flooding and damage widespread, they called in the UK for urgent help.

UK Firefighters and Medical Experts Join Forces

Alongside WMFS, other UK fire and rescue services answered the call. These volunteers arrive with vital search and rescue skills, supported by specialist medical teams from outside the fire service.

Back-to-Back Crisis: From Türkiye Quake to Malawi Floods

Just weeks after returning from the earthquake disaster in Türkiye, 77 WMFS personnel are now heading straight to Malawi to aid those in desperate need.

Wayne Brown, Chief Fire Officer at WMFS, said: “Our thoughts are with everyone affected by the devastating cyclones sweeping multiple countries. Just four weeks after our volunteers helped in Türkiye, they are ready to support Malawi in dire need.

“Our UK ISAR volunteers from the West Midlands will provide expert Search and Rescue flood response. We’re extremely proud of them and will ensure they get all the support they need during and after deployment, especially given the back-to-back missions.”

UK ISAR: A Lifeline in Global Disasters

UK ISAR teams have a solid track record in international emergencies, having deployed to countries hit by hurricanes, floods, wildfires, and earthquakes. Their work saves lives when disaster strikes — wherever it strikes.
