Terrifying Universal Credit scam spreads from Portsmouth to Isle of Wight

Young people targeted via WhatsApp

A nasty scam that started in Portsmouth has now hit the Isle of Wight. Predominantly young, single people are being lured into WhatsApp groups promising tips on how to claim more Universal Credit (UC) or get help with their claims.

Hackers steal details and demand cash using violent threats

Once inside the group, scammers trick victims into handing over login info. They then hack into UC accounts, tweak details by adding extra 1s, and apply for an advance payment.

After the advance lands in the victim’s account, the crooks threaten violence—sometimes sending chilling videos of people being strangled—to force victims to hand over the cash.

DWP warns: Never share your login details

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) stresses they will never ask for personal login information or passwords. They also do not communicate through WhatsApp.
