Kent’s Secret Firefighters Ready for Global Rescue Missions
Hidden within Kent Fire and Rescue Service (KFRS) is a specialist squad few know about. Meet the Technical Rescue Unit – an elite team ready to tackle the toughest emergencies, locally and worldwide, at a moment’s notice.
Elite Firefighters Taking On Disaster Giants
These aren’t your average firefighters. The Technical Rescue team is made up of highly trained experts skilled in handling catastrophes like collapsed buildings, high-altitude rescues, and heavy transport incidents. Their heavy-duty gear clears debris after massive fires or crashes and can even demolish unsafe structures. Plus, they use search dogs and drones to locate missing people and assess structural damage swiftly.
Saving Lives Is Their Mission – Close to Home and Across the Globe
The main part of our role is to provide technical rescue support for the people of Kent and Medway,” says Jim, a Watch Manager for KFRS’s Technical Rescue Team. A fire engine can only carry so much equipment – we bring the extra gear needed to get the job done.
“By far the most rewarding aspect of my job is assisting others. Whatever crisis or disaster they’ve faced, it’s our responsibility to help them get home safely.”
These brave crews also team up with police, ambulance, and coastguard forces, responding to national emergencies and international disasters alike.
World-Class Training for Life-or-Death Missions
“When we’re deployed, we work closely with all agencies involved,” explains Stacey, a Technical Rescue Technician. “Our shared goal is to help those in desperate need, and succeeding makes it all worthwhile.”
All team members undergo National Resilience Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) training, a government-backed programme for mutual aid during major UK incidents like mass flooding. Some, including Stacey and Jim, are part of UK International Search and Rescue (UK-ISAR), deployed to crises worldwide – such as the 2021 Haiti earthquakes.
Kent Fire and Rescue Service also hosts other specialist teams, including rope rescue squads, water safety units, and an animal rescue unit.
