Wightfibre Cowes Cardboard Boat Race Returns for Third Year – And It’s Free to Enter! The Wightfibre Cowes Cardboard Boat Race is making a splash once again! Now in its third year, this quirky contest will hit the waters during Family Day at Cowes Week on August 7th at 3pm.
Build, Race, and Make Waves on Cowes Parade
Teams from across the Isle of Wight are invited to craft boats from cardboard and adhesives, then race them along Cowes Parade near the RNLI station. The event is open to everyone – from local businesses to families – and best of all, it’s completely free to enter this year.
Wightfibre Backs the Event and UKSA Charity
Telecom giant Wightfibre proudly returns as sponsor, helping raise funds for UKSA, Cowes Week’s official charity. Peter Collinge, Wightfibre’s Sales Director, said:
“We’re proud to support UKSA and the amazing work they do with Island children. This race raises vital funds and awareness for a charity changing young lives through sailing and personal development. We wish everyone a fantastic, fun-filled day.”
Emma James, UKSA’s Head of Fundraising, added:
“We’re thrilled to be the chosen charity again! Every penny raised helps disadvantaged children discover confidence, new skills, and thrilling experiences on the water – changing their futures for the better.”
More Boats, More Prizes, More Fun!
Event organiser Tony Downs is aiming even higher for 2016: “We want double the boats from last year. We’re adding new prize categories – fastest boat, best dressed crew, best looking boat and the toughest vessel that stays afloat longest.” This year’s race drops the entry fee but asks teams to fundraise for UKSA instead. Keen sailing fan and photographer Keith Allso is crafting a bespoke cardboard trophy for the champ, while Cineworld Isle of Wight has donated four tickets as prizes.
