Tragedy on Cambridge Heath Road: Woman in Her 50s Dies in Serious Crash

A major East London route, Cambridge Heath Road, is shut both ways after a fatal accident this Thursday afternoon (May 23). A woman in her 50s has lost her life in the smash causing chaos on roads and major bus disruptions.

Incident Details and Investigation Underway

The crash happened at 10:56 am. Emergency services rushed to the scene, but sadly the woman could not be saved.

A lorry driver involved stopped at the scene and has not been arrested. Authorities are working to notify the victim’s next of kin as inquiries continue. Road closures and police cordons remain in place while investigators piece together what happened.

Traffic Chaos and Transport Disruptions

  • Queues have built up as far back as Bethnal Green Station and along Hackney Road from Hoxton.
  • Southbound traffic is heavily delayed on Victoria Park Road.
  • Hackney Road is also closed both ways under the railway bridge.
  • The entire Cambridge Heath crossroads remains cordoned off.
  • Several bus routes—including 26, 55, 106, 254, 388, and D6—are diverted.

Transport monitoring site Inrix is warning commuters to expect ongoing delays.

Police are urging anyone who saw the crash or has dashcam footage to come forward. Witnesses should call 101 or contact @MetCC on X, quoting reference 2377/23MAY.

“Anyone who witnessed this incident or has footage should get in touch to assist our investigation,” a spokesperson said.
