Tragedy Closes M6 Both Ways

The M6 motorway is closed in both directions for most of today after a woman was discovered dead early Friday morning. Emergency services were called shortly after 7:40am following welfare concerns.

A Greater manchester/" title="Manchester" data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">Manchester Police spokesperson said:

“Officers were called to reports of a concern for welfare on the M6 at around 7:42am this morning (Friday, January 16 2026). Sadly a woman was pronounced dead at the scene. Formal identification has yet to take place but there are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances.”

The closure affects the stretch between junctions 23 and 26 near Wigan, sparking major delays for commuters.

Traffic Chaos: No Reopening Time Yet

Both northbound and southbound lanes remain shut with no estimated reopening time. National Highways confirmed investigations are ongoing, keeping the motorway sealed off.

Drivers are stuck in heavy traffic as officers work to clear vehicles at junction 23. Current delays include:

  • Northbound: 45-minute delays, 4 miles of traffic
  • Southbound: 20-minute delays, 3 miles of congestion

Official Diversions in Place – What Drivers Must Do

National Highways issued clear diversion routes to bypass the closure:

Southbound Diversion (follow hollow square signs):

  • Exit M6 at Junction 26
  • At M58/M6 roundabouts, take first exit then second roundabout onto M58 westbound for 9.5km
  • Exit M58 at Junction 3
  • Follow A570 southbound for 8.8km
  • Turn left onto A580 eastbound for 9.2km
  • Rejoin M6 at Junction 23

Warrington Crash Adds to Motorists’ Woes

To make matters worse, a separate crash near junction 21 at Woolston, Warrington, has caused lengthy tailbacks on the M62 towards the Croft Interchange.

Officials are advising drivers to plan ahead, allow extra time, or avoid the area if possible to dodge the double traffic nightmare.
