Hero Dog Woody Saves Mum and Baby from Raging Maidstone Flat Fire
Blaze Breaks Out in Early Hours
Emergency crews were scrambled just after 3am on Saturday to a fierce fire in Maidstone’s Bell Road. The inferno started in a downstairs flat before ripping through the upstairs property and spreading to the roof. Smoke and flames quickly engulfed the building, sparking a major response from firefighters and police.
Massive Firefighting Effort
Four fire engines, an aerial ladder, 16 firefighters, plus three officers battled the fierce blaze. Crews worked fast using hose reels, jets, and compressed air foam systems (CAFS) to bring the fire under control. The aerial ladder helped firefighters cut away damaged roof sections, which were badly destroyed in the blaze. Kent Police and a hazardous area response team also joined the emergency effort alongside South East Coast Ambulance Service.
Dog Woody Steals the Spotlight
The drama took a twist thanks to Woody, a brave springer dog credited with saving a mum and her baby from the spreading flames. The terrified mother, who asked not to be named, told how Woody’s warning woke her up just as fire engulfed her flat upstairs.
“I was half asleep when Woody came in and I could smell the smoke. The fire was already in my property. I knew I had to get out with my baby. I don’t know how badly damaged our stuff is yet—we haven’t been able to go back in,” she said from the devastated scene.
Suspicion of Arson Cast Over Fire
Neighbours claim the fire may have been started deliberately. One anonymous local said a couple living in the downstairs flat, who also have a young baby, might have set the blaze on purpose to force a move after disputes with nearby residents. Kent Fire and Rescue and Kent Police have launched a joint investigation into the cause. The fire caused thousands of pounds worth of damage to both properties, leaving families shaken and homeless. The police confirmed they were called to the scene at 2.21am and enquiries remain ongoing. Stay tuned as we follow this dramatic story and the investigation into the Maidstone blaze.
