Shock at Brighton Half Marathon: Volunteers Caught Reusing Water Cups
A health scare rocked today’s Brighton Half Marathon after two teenage volunteers were spotted reusing discarded water cups meant for runners. The shocking scene has raised serious hygiene concerns at one of the city’s biggest events.
Eyewitness Spots Volunteers Washing and Refilling Bins
According to a local resident, the teens were seen fishing used cups out of a bin, giving them a quick rinse in a bucket of cold water, then handing them out refilled with fresh water to thirsty runners. The resident filmed the incident and warned of the potential health risks.
“The cups were taken straight from the bin and appeared to be washed in cold water for just a matter of seconds before being refilled with fresh water,” the eyewitness said. “This does not meet hygiene standards, especially at the side of the road during a large public event. It could pose a serious health risk to any runner who drank from them.”
Event Organisers Respond: ‘We Take This Seriously’
Sussex News contacted Brighton Half Marathon organisers for comment. A spokesperson said:
“Thank you for bringing this to our attention. To clarify, our cups are compostable and single-use only, and we do not condone any sharing or reusing of cups. We take this incredibly seriously and will be speaking to our teams post-race to investigate how we can strengthen our processes to ensure it doesn’t happen again.”
Health Experts Warn of Risks from Reused Cups
The Brighton Half Marathon normally attracts thousands of runners and fans. This incident has sparked fears over water station hygiene and calls for tougher oversight.
Health specialists warn that reusing cups without proper sanitation can spread nasty bacteria and viruses, risking gastrointestinal infections for runners.
As investigations go on, race participants are urged to stay vigilant about where they get their water and to report any similar concerns to event officials immediately.
