British Lawyer Dies in Laos Alcohol Poisoning Tragedy
Orpington Family Mourns “Brilliant” Simone White
Simone White, 28, a talented lawyer from Orpington, Kent, has tragically died from suspected methanol poisoning while holidaying in Laos. She was one of six victims sickened by tainted alcohol in the backpacker hotspot of Vang Vieng.
Her brother called the past few days “horrific,” describing Simone as an “absolutely lovely” and “brilliant” sister. Neighbours remembered her as kind and sensible, with her whole life ahead of her.
Deadly Drinks: Methanol Poisoning Claims Six Lives
Simone fell ill after drinking free shots at a local bar last week. Methanol, a deadly, toxic alcohol sometimes illegally mixed into drinks, is believed to be the cause. The NHS warns that even a tiny amount can cause blindness or death.
Friend Bethany Clarke, also hospitalised, warned travellers in a Laos backpacker Facebook group: “Six of us drank from the same place and are now in hospital with methanol poisoning.” She urged others to avoid local spirits at all costs.
Victims Include Young Australians and Europeans
- 19-year-old Australian Bianca Jones died last week.
- Bianca’s close friend Holly Bowles, also 19, passed away after hospitalisation.
- Two Danish backpackers in their 20s and a 56-year-old American man are among the fatalities.
Laos Authorities Launch Investigation
The owner and manager of Nana Backpacker Hostel, where several victims stayed, are being questioned. Manager Duong Duc Toan claimed drinks used certified alcohol mixed with ice and Coke Zero. However, police suspect tainted alcohol entered the supply chain.
In response, local officials have ordered bars and hostels in Vang Vieng to stop selling alcohol until further notice.
Community Pays Tribute to Promising Young Lawyer
“Simone was an absolutely lovely girl from a wonderful family. She was very sensible and had so much ahead of her. It’s a tragedy that shows how quickly this can happen to anyone,” said a neighbour.
Simone’s family remains devastated but is being supported by loved ones and the community.
FCDO Issues Urgent Travel Warning
The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office has reiterated advice to travellers to avoid free drinks and be extremely cautious about alcohol sources in countries with less regulation.
Stay safe. Don’t take risks with drinks abroad.
