Major Awards Bash Axed Last Minute Over Writers’ Strike!
The glitzy live event celebrating fan-favourite stars across film and TV was abruptly cancelled due to a massive industry strike. The Writers Guild of America (WGA) called out 11,500 scribes last week, halting work after their contract expired.
Writers Demand Fair Pay and Better Conditions
The WGA is fighting for higher minimum wages, more writers per show, and fewer exclusive contracts, claiming these perks have slumped amid the streaming boom. The strike is the first in 15 years and has already stopped production on hits like The Morning Show, The Handmaid’s Tale, and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.
Stars Back the Strike with Powerful Vows
- Jennifer Coolidge, winner of the comedic genius award for White Lotus, declared she’s “side by side” with strikers. “Almost all great comedy starts with great writers,” she said passionately.
- Pedro Pascal, who bagged Best Hero and Best Duo for The Mandalorian, held three golden popcorn trophies and praised the writers “fighting very hard for fair wages.” He added, “We are all… standing in solidarity with the WGA. We thank you, we 1 you.”
- Joseph Quinn, winner of the breakthrough performance prize, also saluted the striking writers.
Strike Forces Show’s Cancellation and Planned Picket
The WGA planned a picket in Santa Monica before the red carpet and live show were canned. Talks between the union and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) are ongoing, with negotiations expected to resume shortly.
This standoff has shaken Hollywood, leaving fans and productions in limbo as writers demand their fair slice of the streaming pie.
