The Metropolitan Police Service has made a formal request to a coalition of demonstration organizers to consider postponing any planned protests in London during this Armistice Weekend. Senior officers have expressed increasing concerns regarding criminal activities perpetrated by breakaway groups that aim to incite disorder, particularly during such events.
Despite the commendable efforts of organizers who have facilitated tens of thousands of peaceful and lawful protests since October 7, the Met Police remains troubled by the presence of individuals and groups seeking to exploit these gatherings for their own agendas.
In preparation for the upcoming weekend, the Met Police continues to analyze intelligence to better comprehend the underlying issues and respond effectively. Earlier today, senior officers met with organizers representing various groups to convey their apprehensions.
Regrettably, the organizers declined to postpone any of the planned demonstrations.
Deputy Assistant Commissioner Ade Adelekan emphasized the growing risk of violence and disorder attributed to breakaway factions, which is particularly worrisome given the significance and busyness of the forthcoming weekend in the capital. The Met Police’s message to organizers is clear: they urgently urge reconsideration and believe it is inappropriate to hold protests in London during this weekend.
Since October 7, over 160 individuals have been arrested for various offences, including racially motivated public offences, acts of violence, and assaults on police officers. The escalation in violence and disorder, frequently committed by breakaway groups disinterested in the causes of the demonstrations, is of grave concern.
Furthermore, hate crimes, particularly anti-Semitic incidents, have been on the rise. Just on Saturday, a suspect using PA equipment was arrested on suspicion of making anti-Semitic comments. Between October 1 and November 1, 2023, more than 554 reports of anti-Semitic offences and 220 Islamophobic offences have been recorded.
The Metropolitan Police is keen to address these issues and ensure the safety and security of London’s residents and visitors during this significant weekend.
