Tragedy Strikes on World’s Largest Cruise Ship
A man has died after plunging over 80 feet from Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas, the world’s biggest cruise ship. The unidentified passenger jumped shortly after the vessel set sail from Florida on Sunday. The trip was just starting, with the ship bound for a week-long journey to Honduras.
Emergency Rescue and Heartbreaking Outcome
Royal Caribbean confirmed the man was in critical condition when hauled back aboard, but sadly, he later died. The ship halted for two hours as the crew conducted search and rescue operations, alerting the U.S. Coast Guard immediately. The incident happened about 300 miles from the Port of Miami.
Inside the Gigantic Icon of the Seas
The Icon of the Seas is a colossal $2 billion vessel stretching nearly 1,200 feet long with 20 decks. It carries up to 7,600 passengers and 2,350 crew members. The ship boasts 2,805 staterooms, 40 dining venues, seven swimming pools including a 40,000-gallon ‘lake’, a 55-foot artificial waterfall, and entertainment from 50 musicians, comedians, and a 16-piece orchestra. Powered by eco-friendly Liquefied Natural Gas, it embarked on its maiden voyage just this January.
Past Overboard Incidents Raise Safety Questions
This is not the first tragedy on a Royal Caribbean cruise. In April, 20-year-old Levion Parker jumped overboard from another Royal Caribbean ship, Liberty of the Seas, in front of his family. That ship was sailing between Cuba and the Bahamas when the shocking incident took place.
Royal Caribbean and maritime authorities continue to investigate the latest fatal plunge from the Icon of the Seas as shocked passengers shared dramatic rescue scenes on social media. The cause of the man’s jump remains undisclosed.
