Tommy Robinson, the former leader of the English Defence League (EDL), has left the march he was participating in earlier today in London, amidst accusations of inciting hatred. The far-right activist, whose real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, was seen leading a large group chanting nationalist slogans. However, he left the scene before the march escalated into clashes with the police.
As of now, around 100 people have been arrested in connection with the disturbances. The group that Robinson was initially with continued towards Hyde Park, leading to confrontations with riot police in Chinatown. The situation intensified with violent clashes and chants directed at the officers.
In response to a social media comment suggesting that he would have been arrested if he had stayed longer, Robinson replied, “I’m fully aware of that, I’m now with my kids enjoying some time, I’ve not seen them much recently”. This statement was his explanation for departing the march prematurely.
Prior to the event, Robinson had called for a mobilization of “British men” in London to counter what he described as a narrative of Britain’s decline. He emphasized his intention to attend the event as a journalist, aiming to document the proceedings and the response to the recent activities in the area.
In a video message posted on social media, Robinson stated, “I’m going to be there reporting, for you, as a journalist to show what’s going on that day, to document what they’ve allowed to happen over the last three weeks.” This message was in reference to the #Cenotaph #NeverAgain campaign.
The departure of Robinson from the march and the subsequent violence that ensued raise questions about the impact of his presence and rhetoric at such events. The situation in London remains tense following these developments, with law enforcement working to restore order and safety.
