Interpol Nabs Notorious Human Trafficker Kidane Zekarias Habtemariam

Kidane Zekarias Habtemariam, a notorious human trafficker wanted by Ethiopia and the Netherlands, has been arrested. The Eritrean fugitive was hunted for years over migrant smuggling, kidnapping, extortion, and even murder. He led a ruthless criminal gang preying on East African migrants.

International Manhunt Ends with Major Arrest

Habtemariam appeared on Interpol’s radar back in 2019 and is blamed for trafficking thousands. Intelligence shared across Ethiopia, Sudan, the Netherlands, UAE, Europol, and the African Union sparked a multi-country crackdown in March 2022. The task force pooled intelligence and closed in on Habtemariam and his network.

The new leads helped UAE authorities launch a thorough investigation into his operations, uncovering money laundering and links reaching Sudan. His capture cuts off a significant smuggling route into Europe, saving thousands from exploitation.

Top Cops Praise Efforts That Took Down Trafficker

“Thanks to the professionalism and dedication of our police officers, the world’s most wanted human trafficker will no longer be able to commit his despicable actions,” said Brigadier Saeed Abdullah al Suwaidi, UAE’s Federal Anti-Narcotics chief. “We remain committed to protecting vulnerable communities from horrific exploitation.”

Stefan Schrander of the Royal Netherlands Marechaussee, where Habtemariam was on the Most Wanted List since 2021, added: “This successful cooperation with multiple countries, coordinated via Interpol, has already led to the extradition of one of his close associates and now this major arrest. He must face justice for smuggling thousands in brutal conditions.”

Ethiopian Police Commissioner Demelash Gebremichael praised the international efforts: “This arrest of a criminal sentenced to life in prison in Ethiopia is a notable success.”

Stephen Kavanagh, Interpol’s Executive Director of Police Services, hailed the collaboration: “This is proof that global teamwork is the only way to stop criminals who rob people of their dignity. We are determined to bring all members of this vicious smuggling ring to justice.”
