Amazon Pulls Dangerous Butterfly Rings Containing Cancer-Causing Chemical

Deadly Chemical Found in Cute Kids’ Rings

Amazon has been forced to yank women’s and children’s butterfly rings after tests uncovered dangerous levels of cadmium – a known cancer-causing toxin. The Office for Product Safety and Standards slapped a ban on the Dishowme butterfly rings, which were found to contain this “category 1 carcinogen” in alarming quantities.

The rings, imported from China, come in silver tones and are sold in clear plastic bags aimed at women and girls. Trading standards chiefs branded the jewellery a “serious chemical risk” due to levels of cadmium far exceeding the legal limit.

“Cadmium is harmful to human health as it accumulates in the body, may cause cancer and can damage organs,” warned the Office for Product Safety and Standards.

The watchdog demanded Amazon remove the listing immediately. The rings have since vanished from Amazon’s website.

Cadmium: The Toxic Metal Lurking in Cheap Jewellery

Cadmium use is on the decline in Europe, now mostly limited to batteries and industrial pigments. But the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) warns that exposure can seriously damage health.

  • Breathing it in can cause chest pain, cough, and metal fume fever
  • Swallowing it triggers digestive problems like nausea and diarrhoea
  • Long-term exposure harms bones and kidneys
  • Cadmium is officially classified as carcinogenic to humans

Extreme exposure may even cause organ failure or death, though environmental levels are usually lower than that.

Amazon Strikes Back But No Recall

An Amazon spokesperson insisted the retail giant “requires all products to meet laws and policies” and uses tools to prevent unsafe items from being sold.

“The product in question has been removed,” Amazon confirmed, stressing this is not an official recall.

Shoppers beware: cheap bling bought online may not be as harmless as it looks. This toxic ring scandal is a sharp reminder that sometimes, not all that glitters is gold.
