Antisemitism Protest Outside London University Canceled Due to “Amsterdam-Style” Violence Threats

A planned protest against the appearance of a divisive United Nations official at Queen Mary University in London was cancelled amid concerns over violent threats. The Metropolitan Police confirmed they are investigating online posts that referenced “Amsterdam-style” violence in connection with the demonstration, which was intended to protest a scheduled talk by UN special rapporteur Francesca Albanese.

Albanese, who has made contentious remarks regarding Israel and Hamas, was set to speak at Queen Mary University in east London’s Mile End area. Previously, Albanese compared Israel’s actions to those of Nazi Germany and stated that Hamas supporters have a “right to resist.” The Campaign Against Antisemitism, a group critical of Albanese’s views, cancelled the protest after conducting a security assessment and consulting with police. A representative said they were also taking legal action against individuals who made threatening remarks online.

The Met Police assured that “appropriate plans were in place” for the event and are committed to identifying those responsible for the threats. Officers will maintain a presence at Queen Mary University to ensure safety for anyone wishing to protest independently or to attend the university event.

On Monday, a similar protest occurred at the London School of Economics (LSE), where Albanese also spoke. LSE reaffirmed its commitment to free speech and an inclusive environment, while SOAS University of London, where Albanese was also scheduled to speak, emphasized the importance of freedom of expression, adding that it would only limit speech that incites hate or violence.
