Gunfire Erupts Between Greek and Turkish Coastguards in Tense Aegean Standoff

A dramatic shooting incident broke out 11 nautical miles (20 kilometres) southwest of Turkey’s Bozcaada island on Saturday, sparking fresh tensions between Greece and Turkey in their long-running maritime disputes.

Warning Shots and Accusations Fly in Migrant-Plagued Waters

According to a Turkish coastguard statement, two Greek vessels opened fire during what they described as “harassment fire.” Two Turkish coastguard ships swiftly arrived on the scene, causing the Greek ships to retreat.

The Greek coastguard confirmed they fired warning shots at a cargo ship near Lesbos after it behaved suspiciously in Greek territorial waters. When the ship’s captain refused an inspection, Greek forces escorted the vessel back into Turkish waters and alerted Turkish authorities.

Migrant Routes Amid Rising Regional Friction

This stretch of the Aegean Sea is notorious as a corridor for migrant boats traveling from Turkey to Greece and Italy. Greek officials say suspicious ships in the area face regular checks.

But the incident comes amid surging tensions between Greece and Turkey, with both sides accusing each other of airspace violations and aggressive military posturing. Ankara claims Athens “occupies” Aegean islands and harasses Turkish jets. Greece firmly denies these claims and insists it must defend its eastern islands like Rhodes and Kos—popular tourist spots perilously close to Turkey’s coast.

Video Shows Gunfire, Bullet Holes and Crew Panic

Turkish coastguard footage, apparently shot on a mobile phone, captured about a dozen gunshots near the Anatolian cargo ship. A crew member can be heard shouting in Turkish that the Greek coastguard is attacking them. The video shows bullet holes in a window and the ceiling of the ship’s bridge.

The Anatolian carried 18 crew members, including Egyptian, Somali, Azerbaijani, and Turkish nationals. Turkey condemned the Greek gunfire as a breach of international law and has launched a formal investigation, demanding explanations from Greek officials.

Diplomatic Fury and NATO Involvement Loom

Turkey protested the incident and called for urgent investigative cooperation. Meanwhile, Greece has recently appealed to NATO, the EU, and the UN to condemn Turkey’s increasingly aggressive rhetoric. Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias warned the escalating tensions could spark a conflict resembling the ongoing war in Ukraine.

The Anatolian was reported anchored in the Dardanelles Strait by Sunday, as diplomatic channels buzz with urgent calls to de-escalate a powder keg situation in Europe’s southern waters.
